How I Celebrate Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is my favorite festival. It brings joy, family togetherness, and a sense of renewal. During this festive time, I celebrate in various ways that are deeply rooted in Chinese traditions.
Firstly, I decorate my house with red lanterns symbolizing good luck and happiness. The vibrant red color creates a warm and festive atmosphere. Additionally, I put up couplets (duilian) on both sides of my front door. These are poetic phrases written on red paper, and they are believed to bring blessings and ward off evil spirits.
Moreover, I love the tradition of paying respects to my ancestors during Chinese New Year. I visit the gravesites with my family and clean and decorate them. We believe that honoring our ancestors brings good fortune and blessings for the coming year.
One of the highlights of Chinese New Year is the reunion dinner, where the whole family gathers to share a lavish meal. It is a time of laughter, storytelling, and making cherished memories. We prepare traditional dishes, such as dumplings, fish, and glutinous rice cake, which are believed to bring prosperity and fortune.
During the festive days, I also exchange red envelopes (hongbao) with my loved ones. These red envelopes contain money and are given as a symbol of good luck and blessings for the upcoming year. It is always exciting to receive and give hongbao, as it adds an element of surprise and generosity to the celebrations.
Aside from these traditional customs, Chinese New Year is also a time for enjoying cultural performances and fireworks. Lion and dragon dances are commonly seen on the streets, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of drums and cymbals. The firework displays light up the night sky, filling it with colors and adding to the festive atmosphere.
